this movie could have spared me YEARS of pain. me and thousands of others like me.

to the critics: here’s the thing.

Am I cis? No.
Am I upset that they cast a female to play a transman? Yes.
Do I understand why that’s a problem? Yes.

Am I going to boycott this movie? NO.
Because if this movie flops in the box office, it’s not going to be “because they cast a female to play a male character.” Hollywood is going to take it and look at it and say “this movie failed because it featured a trans character. We cannot continue to make movies like this.”
So I’m going to see it, and I might write to movie critics and newspapers in my area about how it was a great movie, but how I wish they had used a trans actor. I’m going to support this movie AND spread the word on trans actors and actresses. And that’s the best way to go about this.

Straight men and women have played Homosexuals. Black actors have voiced white and Hispanic cartoon characters. Mentally handicapped people have been played in cinema by the mentally firm. Being an actor isn’t about portraying what you are, it’s about portraying the character.
You’ll do more harm by hating this film over a choice in actor.
I’ve played gay men on stage, hell I played a woman once. I’m a bi male, who identified as straight when he played those parts. Welcome to the world of actors children! We are taught to be as accurate to the part what we are chosen to be!
See the god damn film people. Nothing like this is out there. A movie like this will enable trans people’s rights to be heard to a wider demographic beyond fucking tumblr. Surprisingly, the majority of folks are ignorant of the issue.
No one raised cane when Harvey Milk was played by a straight male actor. That been called one of the most accurate portrayals of that man and era on film.
Shut your ignorant mouths and see the bigger picture! Support the film, hope it goes far, and help it start a broader conversation.
